That’s the Power of Care

Dhachayini Balasubramaniam
Physiotherapist, St. Luke’s Hospital
Dhachayini is a dedicated physiotherapist at St Luke’s Hospital, helping elderly clients recover their mobility and independence after injuries or illnesses. Working closely with a team of healthcare professionals, she aims to improve her patients' quality of life and provide support to their caregivers.

Her desire to be a physiotherapist began when she was just in primary school. After witnessing her grandmother's care during illness, she was inspired to join the healthcare field. Through participating in community service when she was in the Red Cross Youth in secondary school, she discovered her passion for working with people, especially the elderly. Choosing to be a physiotherapist in the community care sector allows her to form meaningful connections with patients and witness their progress over time.

The greatest part of the job to her is witnessing the joy on her patients' faces when they regain their ability to move and do what they love again. While challenges arise, Dhachayini's growing empathy helps her understand her patients' struggles and motivates her to provide the best care possible.

One unforgettable encounter for Dhachayini was when she cared for a stroke survivor early in her career. It took much encouragement to even get her to participate in therapy as the patient was emotionally affected by her circumstance, but after 3 - 4 weeks of rehabilitation with the team they decided that it was time to let her take a step in the Inpatient Gym. Lacking self-belief, it took much coaxing from the team to get her to try to move her leg. When she did, her disbelief gave way to pure joy. Her face gleamed with joy and wore a smile that was beautifully bright. It was this moment that convinced Dhachayini that she was in the right place, doing the right job.

Looking ahead, Dhachayini aspires to continue being inspired by her patients and colleagues, while also empowering and inspiring new students and therapists she works with.

To her, care gives her "the power to empower as a physiotherapist.”
